Crown Fountain - A Wet Wonder

Friday, September 12, 2008

Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, the Crown Fountain is one of Chicago’s most popular landmarks. It’s made out of a black granite pool placed between two glass towers and it is covered with LEDs depicting faces of the residents of Chicago and natural sceneries. It is 50 meters high and when it was built, in 2004, it cost around 17 million dollars.

In the warm season the Crown Fountain provides entertainment especially for the children of the city who love getting soaked by the water coming out through two nozzles, that makes it seem like the face on the tower is spitting it out. Crown Fountain is extremely popular among the residents of Chicago that come here to relax, enjoy themselves and have their pictures taken in hope that their face might end up on the fountain.

Rubber Duckies Invade London

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

I can here the Brits screaming “Run for your lives, the blue rubber duckies are attacking!!!”, must have been horrible…Well not really, it was just the annual Great British Duck Race, a charity event where people paid 2 ponds two enlist their rubber ducky in a race on the river Thames.

The prize was 10,000 pounds for the fastest floating rubber duck on the river and all the earnings went to charity. In case you were wondering, the rubber ducks were blue because last year, when they were yellow, people threw their own ducks without paying the fee.

This year’s Great British Duck Race scored a new world record for the most rubber ducks in one place, around 250,000. I wonder who had the “pleasure” of counting them.

Salt Hotel de Sal Playa

Saturday, September 6, 2008

In the dining room of the Hotel de Sal Playa in Bolivia, the salt is always on the table. In fact, at the world's only hotel made of salt, the salt is the table.

Located near the famous Uyuni salt mine in the southwestern part of the country, Hotel de Sal Playa's roof, and bar are built of salt. Even the floor is covered with salt granules.

The hotel was built in 1993 by a salt artisan who saw a mint in the number of tourists looking for places to stay while visiting the nearby mine, which is one of the world's largest of its kind.

The lodge has 15 bedrooms, a dining room, a living room and a bar.

The hotel walls are made of salt blocks stuck together with a cement-like substance made of salt and water. During rainy seasons, the walls are strengthened with new blocks, while the owners ask the guests to avoid licking the walls to prevent deterioration.

The Wine-cork Painting

Friday, September 5, 2008

Well if one can create art out of bottle-caps I don’t see why corks can’t be used for the same purpose? It seems Albanian artist Saimir Strati feels the same way, since he has taken on the challenge of creating a 3D painting out of 300,000 wine-bottle corks. What you see in the photos is not the completed project, upon completion it will be a 96 square meter masterpiece depicting people playing guitar.

This is not Strati’s first unusual artwork, in the past he has gained a spot in the Guinness Boook of Records for the world’s largest toothpick mosaic in the world. It contained approximately 1 million toothpicks and it depicted some horses. So be on the look out for Saimir Strati, he’s one special artist.

The Garni Gorge

The Garny Gorge is made out of a high number of basalt columns. It’s an absolute must-see if you find yourself in Armenia. It’s a wonderful canyon shaped by the ever-flowing river Goght river. Atop the basalt walls of the gorge the famous 1st century Garni temple can be seen.

Garni Gorge offers its visitors an incredible view and makes them feel like they’re in a fantasy place.

50ft Tall Mechanical Spider

Thursday, September 4, 2008

During the past 24hrs this gigantic, mechanical, 37ton, 50ft tall spider, complete with 50 hydraulic axes of movement, appeared on the side of a soon-to-be demolished building near the heart of the city, instantly creating a buzz in the area. there’s been talk for the past few weeks about the show’s main star and until the spider appeared last night very few people knew of the form it would take. here are some more images from earlier today. check out the mechanics and seating areas on its back…

i was contacted by 2 people today about this project, one of whom sent across a photo of what she believes to be the same spider with legs extended from a previous date. i have no way of verifying it but it definitely looks similar. i also have no idea where this was taken but i’m presuming it was during either practice or testing prior to the extremely secretive event as the guy behind these animals, françois delarozière, has never before unveiled a spider like this to the public…

Freaky World Record

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

There will be no need for a slow-motion replay to confirm this record-breaking feat.

Schoolgirl Tiana Walton has slithered into the record books - for having the most snails on her face at once.

Nine-year-old Tiana, who loves animals, bravely allowed 25 of the slimy creatures to cover her eyes, nose and mouth.

She smashed the previous record of 15, held by Australian Liam Kenny, and her unusual feat will appear in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Her previous personal best was just nine.

The rules state that competitors have just one minute to put the snails on their face before tipping their head forward for 10 seconds.

Tiana, of Alvanley, Cheshire, said: "I am not squeamish. It is relaxing but it feels a bit cold. They are quite smelly and you can see their big long eyes facing you. I think my friends at school will say 'urgh'."

Local vet Ken Robinson witnessed the attempt and ensured no snails were harmed. He said: "It is a superb achievement and all the snails have been treated to a gourmet meal."

Tiana said her next ambition is to become an Olympic gymnast.

Setting records runs in the family as Tiana’s mother, Tommy, herself appeared in the Guinness Book Of World Records in 1980 for growing the largest lemon in the world weighing 3Ib 14oz..

Slither: Tiana had to sit up for 10 seconds with the snails still on her face to make sure none of them slimed their way out of her record-breaking feat
